Virtual Workshop Planning - 2026

Okay, here’s where we can discuss logistics for the virtual workshop.

Title

“GIS Developer Basics”? Open to suggestions here!

Timeline

Wednesdays at noon starting at the end of August

Date Topic Led By
August 26 Setting up an IDE, getting started with GIS development Burt
September 2 Attribute Rules in the FGDB Hunter
September 9 Python and GIS (maybe just web-focused?) Josh
September 16 A different python topic? up for grabs

@BMcAlpine and @hunter_ray just let me know if those dates don’t work, we can move things around.

Format

This should be hands-on, and definitely not a presentation. We have webinars for that!

When you prepare your topic, try to have very clear, achievable steps that participants can walk through along with you. If we have advance registration, we can ask the participants to come with certain things already installed.

I think just focus on a handful of simple things that you could walk through, slowly, over the course of 30 minutes. I know that’s not much, but it leaves plenty of flex time for questions, letting participants share their screen if they need troubleshooting, etc., and I think we’d get more people actually walking through the steps.

Registration?

I’d like people to register for this. Should we consider a registration cap? @llee as we get more details fixed, it would be great to have a few emails go out about this, and maybe some kind of form.

I kind of hate the forms on the main website. I’m happy to build one myself, if that seems kosher, and I could just give you the link?

Platform

I would like to use the forum, if possible. I made a group for virtual workshop attendees on here, and folks we add to that group will have access to a virtual room where they can do voice / video / screen share. Tested it with a few users, and you can do simultaneous screen sharing, it’s pretty nice.

Resources, questions, etc., could be posted in a workshop-specific category on the forum, too.

I know the forms on the website aren’t the greatest but it does allow me to just email registrants and track who registered in reference to the their membership. Mind if I put a “Coming Soon - ILGISA Virtual Workshop” in the June Monthly Brief, no other information is needed necessarily since you don’t have a title yet. Will this be just for members or for anyone?

Yeah, add it to the brief! It’s developer-focused, so if you want to mention that at least.

I believe in initial discussion, the workshop was suggested to be members-only. Given it’s our members doing the work, not a community-sourced presenter, I think that’s probably fair. Gives a little more value to memberships.
