Panel Discussions @ Annual Conference

Reminder: main topic is over here. You can submit your own questions to the panel right there in the topic.

Soliciting Questions from Audience

Excellent suggestion from @daniel.bartlett to use Survey123 to collect questions from audience before the panel discussion begins, have a QR code on the screen. Maybe print them off, even?

This will likely be a broader discussion about maybe using the same survey for Q&A across different sessions, just use URL parameters to make the responses stick to a given session.

Some logistics would need working out, but the moderator could watch the survey layer, maybe via a dashboard?

Workshops

Mike Kamin will be reaching out to contacts he knows who may have a workshop topic ready to go. If anyone here can personally give one or knows someone who can, the deadline would be tomorrow. No pressure!

One, maybe two of the student panels will shift to a workshop slot, but that still leaves a couple workshops that need filling.

Suggested Topics

  • ArcGIS Pro Fundamentals
  • Dashboards
  • Python

I do GIS all day, I don’t want to do it at a conference!

Totally valid point. Are there “new” things we can offer as workshops that are hands-on, different enough, that it draws folks in?

The two drone workshops are a prime example. Yes, it’s just walking through a common workflow, but it’s giving people a chance to “get their hands dirty” on a subject that many of us don’t encounter in our daily work.[1]

At the County, I work almost exclusively with vector data, and the only rasters I touch are imagery. I would love a workshop that touches on quantitative raster work besides elevation data. Sadly, NOAA could not commit to a workshop this year because the fed space has more restrictions on them at present.

Getting Started with Programming

Too late in the game to get this as a workshop for 2025. @BMcAlpine suggested a workshop that gets folks started with programming, using an IDE, etc. I see this as being incredibly valuable, and want to see it happen.

Could be a workshop next year. Or, maybe our first “virtual workshop” in 2026? We’ll make a separate topic for discussion and planning, but I really want to see this happen.

Soft Skills?

@MeaganB and coodinators / directors like her are in the position of A) managing staff, and B) speaking to other people about GIS, who don’t know much about GIS. I would love multiple viewpoints on something like this, but to still have it instructive. Maybe some weird hybrid between panel and workshop? Not sure. But I think there’s an appetite for this topic.

Drop-in Tech Support

Reminder: full topic over here.

  • Multiple Experts in the Room is fine
  • Will have easels to write the subjects, lots of subjects at once is good, these are not going to be subject-exclusive zones
  • @hunter_ray offered to bring some spare monitors and wireless peripherals. Thank you!
  • Esri might be providing some kind of support for this

TO DO

Committee members: you either are, or likely know, someone who’s an expert in something GIS related. Please ask them if they’d be willing to spare an hour or so for our Tech Support room. The more, the merrier!

Webinar Series

For late-semester months, we should solicit presentations from students! Need to collaborate w/ Education for this to try and put this to GIS professors / advisors. Would be really great to have a “student day” on the webinar, 3 - 4 short presentations showcasing a student’s work, maybe a capstone project, etc.

Drumming up Future Webinars

Keep your eyes peeled at the conference. Don’t be shy to ask someone! An in-person ask is way more likely to result in a presentation than waiting for them to voluntarily fill out the call for content.

Next Month

Due to the ILGISA 2025 SIU-E Regional Meeting: “A Taste of ILGISA” next month, we’re going to have to move the usual date / time of the meeting.

Tentatively, plan on Tuesday of that same week, but once I firm up the date, I will post it to the forum and have the ILGISA calendar updated.

Thanks again, all!
