Valid question: what value does ILGISA stand to bring to its members through this? There are already so many resources out there. Creating new content is high-effort but may not be a valuable activity.
Even supposing we did make our own content, there remains the matter of the various platforms and their algorithms. Plenty of good content just dies in obscurity. Add AI slop on top, and introducing more noise into the mix just doesn’t seem worthwhile.
In the old days of the internet, we had things like “blogrolls” and MySpace recs. Because the internet is vast and noisy, it can be helpful to get recommendations from other humans you already know.
We’ll start there. A topic will be made, and committee members (and anyone else) can chime in with resources that they use in their work. A good place to put links to blogs, whole sites, etc., or even just web tools.
Interesting one-offs like articles and the like could go into The Commons > Show & Tell .
The MOOC. What’s it’s status? I asked. We’ll see.
Nobody wants to take on the herculean task of building out a whole MOOC. Nor should they; again, what is the value ILGISA and its members get back from that immense effort? We want to apply our efforts effectively and wisely.
Is there a way to create tiny courses / modules? Something that awards a little “digital badge” to trigger a little dopamine hit? Something to investigate. Could the forum do this somehow? We’ve got the badges and logins. Maybe there’s a plugin!
