Creating a GIS Portfolio in Quarto

Abstract

So you’ve got a few projects under your belt, some pretty maps. You want to show the world, and you should! Here’s the thing: the world deserves better than a free-tier Google Site or Wix page. With the open-source tool Quarto, you can build a sleek, professional portfolio in no time, and get it online for free! Bring your projects, bring a laptop, and come ready to follow along. We’re going to make you a star, kid!

Hey, folks! Please know that if you attend this and plan to follow along, there are a couple of things you’ll need.

  1. Quarto, obviously! Should work fine on any operating system, and lightweight enough for a laptop.
  2. VSCode or a similar IDE. You could technically write the files in notepad, but don’t do that to yourself!

Bonus: there is a Quarto extension for VSCode! Very much recommended.

We’ll throw together a quick example portfolio that you can easily adapt to your own projects. If there’s time, we can even talk about more advanced things like embedded Python and R code, for the stats-minded and academics out there.
