Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got started in GIS?
I received my bachelor’s degree in Geography with a double minor in GIS and Earth Science from Eastern Illinois University in 2009. I also received my master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in 2011 where I interned at Argonne National Laboratory for 1.5 years.
I officially got my start as a post graduate GIS intern for the Village of Carol Stream between 2013 and 2015. Further, I was hired as a part time GIS Technician for the City of Wheaton in 2014 and progressed to a GIS Specialist in 2017 and finally to my current role as a GIS Analyst in 2023.

Are there any GIS tools or technologies you’re particularly excited about right now?
I am very interested in AI technologies because they are very helpful in my daily workflows. In particular, I use AI to provide feedback on improving existing complex SQL queries or assist in writing a python/arcade script in automating repetitive tasks.
I am also interested in the advancements in GPS technology and how it can be mainstreamed to improve data collection in the field. Further, I would like to know how the data can be integrated with larger companies like Apple and Microsoft.
What’s your favorite GIS-related project you’ve worked on?
My favorite project that I worked on is visualizing our lead service line replacement program. I am always interested in where certain areas of the city need replacement and how GIS can be utilized in drafting a replacement program for these areas.
Do you have a favorite map or GIS application that has inspired you?
My favorite map is the standard National Geographic world map. I like to use this map to visualize where I have traveled over the years and where I would like to go next. Further, it helps me to be familiar with countries that I have never heard of or would like to learn more about.
